Grades Kindergarten – 6th

Each year an Aydah (unit) focuses on specific curricular topics. Topics are taught on a two-year cycle. Our groups are each named for a part of the Aytz, a tree, and represent our vision of children’s educational and personal growth. Hebrew is introduced in the Shorasheem (1st and 2nd grade) unit through letter and sound recognition. In the early years Chavaya participants are introduced to the Hebrew letters through the curriculum, “Phonetic Hebrew Decoding.” Participants learn how letters sound, and how letters are written. As children read more accurately and their skills are reinforced and become more fluid, the remainder of the vowels are then introduced. This approach enables students to read phonetically almost any text in either classical or modern Hebrew.

An important layer of our Hebrew curriculum is Kavanah time. Kavanah means “intention” and provides our children with the opportunity to explore the meaning of the prayers and how they relate to their lives’. We strive to create a feeling of comfort and familiarity with Jewish prayer, which will permit participants to fully engage in the ceremonies and rituals of Jewish life.
