Early Voting throughout New York continues through this Sunday, November 3rd in the all-important 2024 General Election!
Voters will choose the US President, Vice President, all of the US House of Representatives, some US Senators, the entire New York State Legislature (Senate and Assembly), various state and local judges, other officials including Westchester County District Attorney, and will also vote on a NY Constitutional Amendment (details below), and a County Proposition that would increase the term length of Westchester County Legislators from 2 years to 4 years.
On the ballot in New York is an important statewide proposal, also known as Prop 1 or the New York ERA, which would enshrine in New York’s Constitution important anti-discrimination protections that, surprisingly, are not already there. Currently, New York’s Constitution protects us only from discrimination based on “race, color, creed [or] religion.” The proposed amendment would also protect us from discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, or sex, including sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes, and reproductive healthcare and autonomy.
While those protections are already included in New York statutes, elevating them from our state statutes to our state Constitution would provide stronger protection. Prop 1 does not change the substance of any existing New York laws, it does not add any rights that do not already exist in New York, and it does not eliminate any existing rights in New York.
