SUMMARY:Untermyer Gardens Guided Walking Tour (Sisterhood)
DESCRIPTION:Join Sisterhood for a Guided Walking Tour of...\nUntermyer Gard
 ens Conservancy\nSunday June 1st\n10:30 am - 12 pm\n\nONLINE RESERVATIONS
HAVE BEEN EXTENDED FOR A SECOND TOUR! CLICK HERE!\nContact Heidi Siesfeld\
, coordinator of the event\, with questions.\n\n\n\nOnce called America
’s most spectacular garden\, Untermyer Gardens was created in 1917 by Sa
muel Untermyer on the grounds of his Greystone Estate overlooking the Huds
on River.  It was designed by William Welles Bosworth\, the architect who
had designed Kykuit\, the nearby Rockefeller Estate.  Today’s garden c
omprises 43 cultivated and woodland acres and combines exceptional horticu
 lture\, monumental architecture\, and multi-cultural design in a majestic
natural setting.\n\nThe walking tour typically takes 90 minutes to 2 hours
\, and is for attendees without physical limitations. It requires some sta
mina and the ability to traverse stairs and uneven\, unpaved terrain. Atte
ndees should wear sturdy shoes and carry water bottles. Hats and sunscreen
are recommended on sunny days! The cost of the tour is $20. \n\nThe tour
will discuss Samuel Untermyer's fascinating life (1858-1940) and the res
urrection of the gardens since 2010. Untermyer was born in Virginia to Jew
ish immigrants from Bavaria and raised in NYC after the Civil War. He was
a prominent Jewish leader of his time\, helped to form the first Jewish la
w firm on Wall Street\, worked to combat antisemitism in US and worldwide\
, and was an avid Zionist. \n\nThe Conservancy does not have a cafe but d
oes have a water fountain.  BYO picnic lunch or enjoy lunch at a nearby e
atery.\n\nIf you are interested in reading a book before the tour (or even
after...)\, we recommend: Paradise on the Hudson (click to order) which i
s about the creation of Untermyer Garden and its patron Samuel Untermyer.
