TINR’s Social Action Committee is dedicated to engaging in Tikkun Olam, improving the world around us, by identifying issues of local and global concern and responding to them within a Jewish context.
Currently, we are making a difference in the world through the following projects:
Darfur Action: This year, we join Jewish World Watch in a project they have created. The Backpack Project will enable hungry and frightened children in a refugee camp in Chad to attend schools run by the International Rescue Committee. Please contact Beth Ecker Levy at Eckerlevy@aol.com.
Collections: Used cell phones to give out to domestic violence survivors. Please save your used cell phone and put in the bin next to the reception area by the clergy offices. Please contact Beth Ecker Levy at EckerLevy@aol.com.
Annual Chanukah Toy Drive: Social Action collects and distributes toys to disadvantaged children during Chanukah. Please bring new, unwrapped toys to the Temple office.
Environmental Social Action: The Social Action Committee will have its Fourth Annual Earth Day Clean up in the spring. We also will be selling recyclable bags to use when grocery shopping.
Habitat for Humanity: Social Action and TINR Brotherhood co-sponsors projects with Habitat for Humanity.
United Hebrew Geriatric Center: Social Action and TINR Brotherhood co-sponsor visiting days with local seniors.
Our mission is to provide our families with opportunities to advance the causes of social justice. We develop actions within the framework of Reform Judaism, often collaborating with qualified organizations to maximize the effects of current campaigns. Join us in a creative process to raise awareness and distribute social action information that will bring us closer to fulfilling the commandment of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world).
