Brotherhood of Temple Israel of New Rochelle
Brotherhood is an active, vibrant group of men, young and old, who are dedicated to serving the Temple Community, the City of New Rochelle and those in need, wherever they may be. While much of our focus pertains to Jewish causes, we do so much more.
Monthly Meetings:
Brotherhood (also known as Men of Reform Judaism) meets once a month, usually the second Monday of each month from 7:30 to 8:45 pm in the Temple Youth Lounge. Each meeting draws approximately 25-30 members who discuss and plan events, and figure out more ways to better serve our community. Please, come and join us for a meeting and then continue with us to the "after meeting" where we often grab some refreshments at a local New Rochelle tavern. Our schedule of meetings for the remainder of this programming year are: February 11th, March 10th, April 14th, May 12th and June 2nd. The June 2nd meeting is the first Monday of the month due to the holiday of Shavuot falling on the second Monday in June.
For Our Temple Youth:
Brotherhood sponsors numerous Temple activities including Wacky Game Day, Field Day, Craft Day and the renowned Purim Carnival. Brotherhood also helps offset the cost of Kallot (Youth Conclaves) for our Youth Group members.
For Our Temple Members:
Brotherhood sponsors a Temple Softball team, a Defensive Driving Course, Tennis Night, the New Member barbecue and the recording of B’nai Mitzvah ceremonies. Brotherhood has purchased television monitors for the rear of our sanctuary, a defibrillator for the Temple, and a new camera and recording system for our sanctuary. We also prepare and serve hundreds of latkes for the Temple Chanukah party.
Brotherhood Breakfasts:
The esteemed Brotherhood Kitchen Krew prepares several breakfasts each year featuring interesting and informative speakers along with scrambled eggs with lox and onion, bagels, cereal, danish, juice and coffee. Guaranteed not to leave hungry, you will also leave better informed about some important current event or the status of the continued conflict in the Middle East...and it's free. In 2007, some of our special guests included Lou Young of CBS-TV, Cantor Erik Contzius, and candidates involved in political debates for Westchester County District Attorney, Westchester County Clerk and Judge of the New Rochelle City Court.
Dramatic Reading Series:
Brotherhood sponsors a Dramatic Reading Series with the help of our own stage and screen actor, Temple Israel Board Member, Matthew Arkin. These readings bring accomplished Broadway and Television actors and actresses to Temple Israel where they try out some excellent new material in front of Temple members – for free. Those attending have seen many excellent shows, some of which were later brought to Off-Broadway theaters.
Along with Sisterhood:
Joining with Sisterhood, Brotherhood sponsors an annual "battle of da' hoods" which this year featured a "cook-off" on January 12, 2008. Brotherhood and Sisterhood also share the bimah with our b'nai mitzvah students and present them with a kiddush cup and make a donation to a worthy Israeli charity in their name. We also join with Sisterhood to provide books to new confirmands and high school graduates, give Shalach Manot packages to new Temple members, help decorate the Sukkah, organize an End of the Year dinner and special prayer service, promote social action and sponsor the Israeli Scouts.
Social Action:
Brotherhood has worked with Habitat for Humanity of Westchester to help restore a porch in downtown New Rochelle, help build a house in Yonkers and help restore a house damaged by fire in New Rochelle. We are planning another build with Habitat in April, 2008. Brotherhood also visits United Hebrew Geriatric Center to meet with its residents, prepares latkes for the TINR Friendship Club and provides funding for the TINR Social Action Committee.
Membership:
Becoming a member of Brotherhood is easy. You can pay your annual dues directly by checking the Brotherhood box on your annual dues statement or by sending a check to TINR Brotherhood. Dues are $45.00, a portion of which goes to support our parent organization, Men of Reform Judaism, the men's agency of the Union of Reform Judaism, the central body of Reform Judaism in North America.
